The title MANoMAN plays on the German exclamation of amazement, “Mann, oh, Mann!”, similar to “boy, oh boy”.

Through the display window of the former pharmacy, a red MAN semi-trailer truck appears – MAN being a German vehicle manufacturer – wedged between pillar, wall and ceiling, jacked up and dangerously tilted.

It seems to have burst into the room. The exposed driver’s cabin, the key still in the ignition and a blinking warning light suggest a breakdown, accident or catastrophe.

Since the vehicle could not fit through the entrance, it was dismantled, transported through the narrow glass door and reassembled inside. Visible welding seams bear witness to this elaborate and absurd operation.

MANoMAN explores the tension between mobility and standstill. The truck represents boundless freight transportation, permanent movement and performance associated with masculinity – yet here it has been deprived of its function and forced into immobility. Presented and simultaneously deconstructed, the vehicle itself is “in trouble”. Its presence in the former pharmacy therefore seems almost logical: it is in need of repair.
